A HEART FOR EUROPE

Joanna and James Bogle. World War I began with the shooting of the Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife at Sarajevo. The shape of Europe for the rest of this century was decided by the 4 years of fighting in 1914-1918 and the decisions made by the victors in the aftermath of the war. The fall of the monarchies was accompanied by a collapse of the social and cultural framework in Europe. The resulting conditions gave rise to the extreme ideologies that followed the War. A Heart for Europe tells the tragic history of the young Charles of Austria-Hungary, who died in exile in 1922. His "cherished aid for the establishment of peace among European nations" bears special relevance today. Charles married Princess Zita of Bourbon-Parma before the First World War, thus joining Europe's leading Catholic royal houses. Together they served as Christian rulers of a multi-nation empire. As the young "Peace Emperor" he directed his energies to a campaign to end the bitter slaughter which was tearing Europe apart. As the author observes, "a significant opportunity to prevent the tragedy of the First World War was missed by the Allies." Fifteen photographs. Foreword by Otto von Hapsburg, son of Emperor Charles. 176 pp. PB. ITEM #10282 $13.50  OUT OF PRINT
