AMERICA'S CHURCH
The Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception
Gregory W. Tucker. The Basilica of the National Shrine
of the Immaculate Conception is the largest Catholic church ever built in
the Western Hemisphere and the eighth largest religious edifice in the world.
Better, the shrine is a collective tribute to Our Blessed Mother under
her most admirable title, and a public demonstration of the love and devotion
she inspires in the hearts of her children. Hundreds of photographs
in color and black and white illustrate the inspiring history of this great
shrine, now a prominent sight along the skyline of our nation's capitol.
Many pictures are shown of the various side chapels honoring Our Lady under
the various titles significant to the nation whose donations were sent for
construction. Women played a large role in fundraising, and the shrine
displays a chapel donated by ladies bearing the name of Mary as their own.
This is an excellent presentation with outstanding photography, which also
includes several pages of Chronology and Statistics and a complete index of
subjects and pictures. A great gift item for ones own home or for others!
